Should fertilizer be applied when installing sod?

It is a good idea to use fertilizer when installing new sod.  This gives the plant important nutrients that it needs to grow into your soil!

That being said, during winter months it actually is better if you do not use fertilizer since the grass is growing more slowly.  When installing sod in winter, plan on fertilizing once the weather warm up in the Spring.

We sell bags of starter fertilizer that cover exactly one pallet of sod (Click here to add to cart).  This takes the math out of determining how much fertilizer you need!

The team here at Central Sod created this handy flow chart that makes it easy to determine if you should be applying a starter fertilizer.  Note that these dates would be for the Mid-Atlantic area (Maryland, DC, Delaware, Virginia) so you may have to adjust the dates depending on the area of the country you live in.
